Rutgers University is in the news. A Rutgers University Student has positively changed the life of a young Las Vegas girl forever. Katherine Lau, a student at Rutgers, was in her hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada over the summer, and looking for an internship she could take part in to gain more experience. As a biomedical engineering student, Lau met up with a professor of engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He told her of the need for a prosthetic hand for a little girl named Hailey Dawson, age 4. Lau met Dawson and her mother and knew that she had to try to do something for the little girl. Lau used her educational background and knowledge of 3D printer to create a movable hand for young Dawson that can grow as she grows. Though such blueprints for 3D printed, movable hands already existed, Lau’s challenge was to make a hand small enough, and able to fit Dawson’s deformities. Lau’s experience was more than just a summer internship to her because she knew that she made a difference in Dawson’s life. It was all made possible by a grant from Rutgers University’s Douglass Residential College that was founded for women working towards science and engineering degrees.
